Mod 5 The Museum Experience

Hi Everyone,

I'll be doing the final grading for the Museum Experience class this week-end. This is a reminder for you to go back and double check your work to see that it is complete. On the Syllabus, I asked you to write 4 papers of at least 750 words each and 2 photo essays where you would photograph the museum spaces and more than a few of the pieces you found there that really interested you. The photo projects should have captions identifying the art work and a sentence or two of commentary. (previously I asked for 6 papers)

You may go back and edit your work to date easily by going to the dashboard in your blog and clicking edit post.

It might be helpful to go back and re-read the syllabus again as I ask many questions there for you to consider as you write. A general template however would be to start with an introductory paragraph about the museum itself, its architecture and who the architect was. Next, a paragraph or two about your impressions of your visit and what work interested you would be in order. Next, you could take three or more paragraphs to discuss the one particular piece that you choose to write about. It should include some biographical information, what movement the piece belongs to, what its influences were and what it may have influenced. Most importantly, you should look more carefully at it using you own eyes, heart and mind to describe in detail, formal elements about the piece, that is, aspects of composition and use of paint, etc... Finally how it may have impressed or moved you.

Grades will be based on the big picture though. I prefer not to put a number grade on each piece. I will consider all of your work and contribution to this class including your being there from the beginning, the number of posts and comments you have left, my sense of your spacing out your visits and really taking time at each museum, the quality and length of your papers, and your photographs that you took and posted.

I hope you have enjoyed this process and have learned much! Hopefully you'll be visiting many more museums in the future and continue on in your art appreciation and education! It truly is a lifelong quest.

This is a bit off the topic of the class but I wanted to let everyone know about the birth of our new grandson, Kieran Michael Nevins in Richmond, VA... We went down for his birth last week... He is in healthy, wonderful shape. Debbie and I are holding him just 20 minutes after he was delivered by C-Section... Our son Tyler is a graphic designer in Richmond where he lives with his wife Jessica.

Hi All!

It looks like everyone's been enjoying their excursions to the various museums. Seeing everyone's posts makes me excited to visit those museums as well. Last weekend I went to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. What an amazing place! Here is a picture of me in front of the musuem, as well as a picture of it's beautiful interior.I will be posting more pictures and my paper on one of the Etruscan tombs on my blog over the weekend. So What's Required?

I had a message from a member of the class asking me to clarify what's required to do this class... where the papers go, how many, etc....

I used to require a paper for each visit, spread out over the course of the Mod... Last mod, I decided to cut it back to 4 papers and 2 photo essays with captions of 2 of the visits... All work should be posted to your own blog. I noticed a big improvement in the work when you put your writing on your own blog instead of emailing me your work. Take a look at Beth's blog from last mod to see an example of my expectations:

Take a look at how she responded personally to her visits. She set the stage with observations about the architecture and history of the building with some overall shots. Next as she responded to the artist she chose, she did include some biographical information on the artist and placed the artist's work in the context of a movement that came from someplace and may have influenced another movement. This information is easy to look up on the internet... be sure to cite your sources and when cutting and pasting another's writing, put it in italics and cite it. Mostly though, I am interested in you becoming passionate about the piece you chose and your communicating that through your images and writing.

I shot this image of the ceiling of the Great Hall at the Metropolitan Museum of Art... I am interested in your incorporating pictures of the spaces too!

Today I visited the Yale Art Gallery in downtown New Haven. I've been there many times before- but today I brought a friend who had never been, and is not really an "artsy" person. I suggest that you all do the same, because I found much enjoyment watching her look around and constantly ask, "How did they do that?".

I visited the New Britain Museum of American Art this past weekend which impressed me as much as it had last year. I thought they did a fantastic job with the building and with their additions to the collection. It really has a spacious feel, although it isn't a particularly large museum.

Next weekend I will be going to Boston to visit my brother and some friends so I am planning on going to the MFA.

Week 3 - I am going to try for the Atheneum this weekend

Week 4 - I will be going to the Met this weekend.

Week 5 - Plan on going to the Yale Art Gallery

Week 6 - Plan on going to the Yale Center for British Art

Week 7 - Will make it to the Atheneum if I cant make it during week 3

Every Sunday at The Florence Griswold!

Every Sunday visitors are encouraged to try their hand painting plein air, in the open air, just like the Lyme Art Colony artists. There are also hands-on art projects, books, games and puzzles to enjoy. A great way to spend the day.

What Do I Have To Do This Week?

Welcome all! This is the first week of class. We will use this as the set up week to get all systems operating. During this week you should:

- Read the syllabus, click through the links provided and understand what will be required of you in this class.

- Respond to the email from blogger and click on the link which will take you to a sign in page to join this blog, The Museum Experience. If you don't have a Gmail account, you will cick on the link there and take a minute to create an account. Use that log in to access this blog. Gmail is a Google company that has an amazing array of free services that could change your life... so don't be shy here.... Remember to write down your username (your new email address) and password.

-Create your own blog. This takes a few minutes... choose a template, click publish and you are ready to post to it. You may use the post editor as your word processor to actually write your paper. Please post images with your papers from your outing. Include shots of the museum, and the piece that you are writing about. Use close up shots to help illustrate points you are making in your paper. Papers should be 650 - 900 words long. You may find it easier to use Word to write... Use Tools>Word Count to count your words to check your progress. Take a look at Museum Experience student Tad Gembala's blog to see what I am expecting:

-Review the class calendar. There are 6 trips out to museums, three assigned and 3 of your choice on the list in the syllabus. Create your first post to your blog with an outline of the trips you will be taking, with dates. Put them on your calendar, invite friends and family and most of all, have fun with this. This is essentially a travel course... you need to travel to do it. Here is a link to the calendar

-You will write 4 "papers" with photographs and 2 "photo albums" with captions recording your impressions from your museum visits...

-Line up a digital camera and learn how to use it. Learn how to get your images onto your computer, edit them and upload them to the blog. This is easy to do with free Picasa software from Google. http://picasa.google.com/ Learn how to turn off the flash on your camera as flash is never allowed inside the museums.

-Class will run fromTuesday morning at 11 am until Tuesday at 11am. I will grade each week's work Monday morning before 11 am. Because unexpected things can happen, there will be a make-up week during the final week of class where you will have the opportunity to make up the grade for 1 week that you missed. Post comments on each others posts and post to this blog each week. Use this blog to tell everyone what you are doing and to invite others to visit your blog as well. At least 1 letter grade will reflect your posting and helpfulness to others in this online community. If you don't contribute, the highest grade you can earn for the week will be a "B".

-Post your blog address and your screen name that you use here in the "comment" link to this post.

-Review the video I created on how to post to this blog. (Link on upper left also.)

-All of this will be completed by Tuesday morning, June 5th. If you wish, you can get a head start on your visits and writing and begin your first project this week too.

-Email me if you would like me to call you to help walk you through any of this...

A business major who took this class a couple of years ago remarked, "I never knew that you could take a day and plan an outing to a museum with your family and have a great time! This has been a great experience!" This sums up my hopes and dreams for you in taking this class.

Hello everyone! and welcome to the class blog for the Mod 4 class, AH251, The Museum Experience. Here we will post images and comments each week about your adventures on the road as you travel around in your search for the sublime! I will be emailing everyone instructions on how to post on the first day of class.

To get the most out of your online class this Mod, it is important to communicate regularly with other members of the class and with me in this forum..... in fact, it is part of your grade. Post often and post early, to paraphrase a famous statement. I'm looking forward to this experience with you. It is my sincere hope that this class will be a worthwile and enjoyable experience for you.

I'd like you to create your own blog as well as join this blog. There you will post your papers and photos on a weekly basis. Be sure to post here as this is where we build the class community. Remember to put a link to your blog along with your post here.
